Army Capt. Lawrence Minnis had fiercely fought his way back from being unable to walk or talk unable, really, to do much of anything for himself.

Still, after months of grinding through meds and treatments and physical therapy from having developed acute disseminated encephalomyelitis in Iraq, Minnis, 27 when felled, had recaptured only about 70% of functionality. Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis is a rare inflammation of the brain and spinal cord that brings on a constellation of neurological nightmares.

Franken’s first bill–service dogs for veterans–nearly a law

Franken5St. Paul, Minn. — Sen. Al Franken’s first piece of legislation–the Service Dogs for Veterans Act–is on its way to the White House for approval.

The Veterans Administration would develop partnerships with organizations that provide disabled veterans with service dogs. Franken said he introduced the legislation after meeting a veteran who said his service dog improved his quality of life. Read On » » »
